What is BESS – battery-only for solar panels?

Battery Energy Storage System

BESS stands for Battery Energy Storage System and refers to larger, dedicated battery storage systems that can be connected to various energy sources, including solar panels.

The system can also function as a standalone energy storage solution without necessarily being directly connected to a solar PV system.

These systems are ideal for larger companies, industries, or grid operators that need to manage large amounts of energy and ensure a stable supply. They are also relevant for large solar parks where the aim is to optimise energy storage and security of supply.

Solar panels with efficient Battery/BESS solutions

Battery systems (BESS) ensure a stable energy supply by tailoring capacity and sizing to companies’ needs. When integrated with solar panels, efficiency and operational reliability increase, making BESS a dependable and future-proof energy solution.

Capacity

Select the right battery capacity based on the company’s energy consumption patterns and how much storage is needed during periods of high or low solar production. This ensures the battery system has sufficient capacity to cover consumption during peak-load periods.

Sizing

We provide advice on the optimal size of the solar PV system and battery system to ensure an economically advantageous solution. This includes selecting the appropriate size of inverters, batteries, and other components, so that neither over- nor undersizing occurs.

Integration

BESS solutions are designed to perform optimally as part of new energy systems, contributing to an overall efficient energy solution. This ensures stable and reliable operation while making the energy supply more flexible and future-proof.

Scalable Reliable Flexible

BESS solutions are scalable and flexible, making them ideal for large solar PV systems.

The systems can be adapted to increasing energy needs and ensure a stable energy supply, even during peak-load periods or when energy prices fluctuate. High operational reliability and the option for intelligent energy storage reduce operating costs by optimising the use of stored energy when it is most economically advantageous.

    How does BESS work?

There are many different BESS systems, where the most commonly used and long-lasting lithium batteries store surplus energy and release it when needed, helping to balance energy consumption and reduce costs.

Technical operation and components in a BESS system

  • BESS Structure

BESS systems can store energy both from green energy sources such as solar PV systems and directly from the power grid. The stored energy can then be used to supply buildings and industry or sold back to the grid, depending on requirements.

  • Electric Energy Storage

The electricity produced by the solar panels is sent to and stored in these energy storage systems (containers) and is built from three main components: cells, modules, and racks. Cells are the smallest units that store energy, and multiple cells form a module. Modules increase storage capacity and voltage and protect the cells. Multiple modules are assembled into racks, which further increase capacity and can be scaled as needed. This flexible structure makes the system ideal for larger BESS installations and industrial energy storage.

  • BMS - Battery Management System

This function monitors and manages the battery’s condition, including balancing the cells, controlling temperatures, monitoring charge levels, and protecting against over- or undercharging. It ensures the battery operates within safe limits and maximises efficiency and service life.

  • HVAC - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning

HVAC plays a crucial role in ensuring optimal operation and service life for the batteries. The HVAC system regulates the temperature and humidity around the batteries, preventing overheating and protecting against extreme temperature fluctuations. This ensures the batteries are kept within the recommended temperature limits, increasing the system’s efficiency and reliability.

  • Fire Suppression System

Inside the containers, an advanced fire suppression system is installed, designed to protect the battery system against fire. The system uses sensors to detect smoke or heat and automatically activates extinguishing agents such as gas or foam to quickly control the fire and minimise damage.

  • PCS - Power Conversion System

The PCS converts power between the batteries’ direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) for use in the grid and buildings. It enables charging the batteries from the grid and supplying power back to the grid. The PCS stabilises voltage and current and works together with the BMS and HVAC to ensure efficient operation and battery protection.

  • EMS - Energy Management System

The EMS can be considered the brain of the entire BESS system. It controls and optimises the energy flow between batteries and the power grid for businesses. It selects the best times for charging and discharging, balances energy sources to reduce costs, and monitors the system for optimal performance. The EMS works together with the BMS, PCS, and HVAC for efficient operation.
