Key considerations when installing a solar PV system on the roof of a commercial or industrial building

Orientation and placement

The orientation and placement of the solar panels are crucial to their efficiency. South-facing roofs with a pitch of 30–45 degrees are ideal, as they achieve maximum output around midday when the sun is highest. If electricity consumption is evenly distributed, an east/west orientation may be more advantageous. This orientation allows the solar panels to utilise the morning sun from the east and the afternoon sun from the west, resulting in a more balanced use of the sun’s energy throughout the day.

Roof load-bearing capacity

A solar PV system typically weighs 12–15 kg per square metre, and most roofs can support 15–25 kg per square metre. If the roof cannot bear the weight, it can lead to sagging, leaks, and damage to the structure.

Solar panels are designed to withstand climate and weather conditions, but in areas with, for example, strong winds, it is important to take extra precautions to ensure stability and avoid damage to the roof covering.
